Make Dinas Powys a Fairtrade Village!

Hi,

I work for the Wales Fair Trade Forum and we are trying to make Wales the first ever Fair Trade Country. This means we need towns and villages from across Wales working together to become a 'Fairtrade town/ village'.

I have organised a meeting open to anyone who lives or works in Dinas Powys and is interested in Fairtrade or would like to know more. At the meeting we will discuss how we can work together to meet the following criteria to become a Fairtrade Village:

1.The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.
2.A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area's shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments
(Target for number of retail outlets: Population of < 10000 = 1 retail outlet per 2500; Population < 200000 = 1 retail outlet per 5000; Population of < 500000 = 1 retail outlet per 10000
Target for number of catering outlets: Population of < 10000 = 1 catering outlet per 5000; Population < 200000 = 1 catering outlet per 10000; Population of < 500000 = 1 catering outlet per 20000)
3.Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)
4.Attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign (this can be done with putting on events)
5.A local Fairtrade steering group must be convened to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday 9th April at 7pm in the Welsey Methodist Church Hall.

Everyone is welcome! Please let friends and colleagues know. I have a poster available if you are able to advertise the meeting on noticeboards etc

If you would like anymore information about Fairtrade or the Fairtrade Village Scheme please email me at kate@fairtradewales.com or phone 07882 680113

Thank you!

Come on folks, get on board the good ship 'Fairtrade' and help the producers of the foods and other things we buy earn a living income, and then a bit - so that they can build things that we take for granted - schools, clinics, clean running water.  It doesn't cost that much more to go the Fairtrade route and you're helping people other than multinational companies.

Re: Make Dinas Powys a Fairtrade Village!

I do buy Fairtrade if I can afford to.  I also try to buy the recycled option where possible.  I recycle and compost stuff at home and have reduced my waste to half a black bag per week.  I donate on regular basis to water charities to try to ensure that clean water is available to people in countries where water is a huge issue.  The problem I have with Fairtrade stuff is that it is often more expensive and I am on a really low income (as I work for the Vale of Glamorgan Council) and I often find myself in a position where I just cannot afford the more socially responsible option.  This is fine when it comes to clothes, etc as I can just do without or buy from charity shops (a method of recycling), but when it comes to food, if the difference is not too much, I go for the Fairtrade option, but some Fairtrade stuff I just cannot afford to buy on a regular basis.  I think it has to be a matter of do as much as you possibly can within your own limitations.
