The Cross Keys - Another change of Manager
Modified By dinaspowys on 4/22/2008 8:56:52 PM)

Hi,

There is another change of management at the Cross Keys. We now say good bye to Mike and Claire and hello to the new manager. Apparently he is from the village but I have heard nothing besides that.

Must admit I have never seen the pub so quiet in the 12 years I have lived in the village. I popped in last night after the football about 7pm and there was only 1 customer besides me! Quite amazing. Oh, but they have finally replaced the big screen in the back with a 50" plasma. If only they would spend some money on the gents toilets and a lick of paint. The place is really looking tatty at the moment.

Seems everyone goes to the Three Horseshoes now, even though the prices are higher.

Well done to Sue, she's doing a great job!

Quick Update....

The Cross Keys is now managed by a chap called "Chris". Nice chap.. Had a few chats with him. Grew up in the village, moved away and has a rather impressive resume.

Looking forward to some changes. We all want them, including Chris. Let's see what happens.

Hello there. ive noticed that some people buy their drinks from the cross keys and then walk into the horse shoes now. the keys will be out of business in a few years i'm saying, as you have noticed theres very few customers there now, the smoking ban hasn't helped either.

Must admit taking drinks from the X Keys into the Shoes would be quite tempting as the prices are higher in the Shoes. Not seen it happen myself. Sue, the landlady, is very switched on. I'm sure she would soon spot any people regularly doing it.

I would have to agree that the pubs are definitely quieter in the last year than I have ever seen them before. Some nights there are more staff than customers in them. They are both competing hard for the few people that do seem to come out. As you say, possibly only one will survive.

Yes the Cross Keys is a lot quieter... I don't ever remember it being that quiet before.

A lot of the old regulars from the 'Keys seem to have moved next door to the 'Shoes... some have even made the long old haul round the corner to the Star.

This isn't just because of the smoking ban or the economic downturn that's made many of us tighten our belts a bit.

In the case of the 'Keys its simply the way the pub has been run over the last few years.

I sincerely hope Chris does have some success in turning it around.

Thinking back to what it was like when Sam was manager and how it was in the past few months is no comparison.

Still look at who has run the pub in the inbetween times. Says something for the managing company (Mitchell&Butlers I think) They sold the 'Shoes because it didn't take any money, and then managed to lose nearly all the trade the 'Keys had. The words that come to mind about M&B are that they couldn't manage  pissup in a brewery, let alone a village pub.

At least I haven't seen any drug dealing taking place for a while in the 'Keys. Where have the scum gone anyway? Castle Oak? - certainly not the Swan.
