Is Dinas Powys a good place to live?

Hi,

My family and I are thinking of relocating to Cardiff for work reasons and we are looking for somewhere to live. What we want is a friendly community we can join and be part of, a good place to bring up a family (two children; 2 1/2 years and six months), somewhere safe, quiet/rural feel.

People who know Cardiff all suggest Dinas-Powys as a good place to start looking. What do the other forum users think? Looking through previous posts on this site there seems to concern about youthful exuberance/thuggery (delete as appropiate), pollution, traffic etc.

I really want Dinas-Powys to be what we are looking for but at the same time Mrs Newbie might right off the whole move if I can't find somewhere good to live

Thanks for any help
Rob

PS My wife is a keen musician, whats the local orchestra like?
PPS Looking at previous posts I can reassure everyone that we are aiming to be a one car family and are committed to cycle/rail transport!

Re: Is Dinas Powys a good place to live?

Personally, I love DP.

It's a lovely place to live with loads of amenities, loads to do, good transport links, good schools, good clubs, good pubs, good restaurants and a wonderful social life. There is something here for everyone. For all ages and all interests.

Make sure you send the little one to Auntie Mal's nursery and the elder to either St. Andrew's Major CW school or Dinas Powys Infants School on Cardiff Road (http://www.dinaspowysis.co.uk/). BOTH seem to be turning out great kids and results! I have a daughter of 6.5 and she went to Mal's and then to St. Andrews. I couldn't be more happy with the way they have looked after her!

I hope none of the postings on the discussion forum have given you a bad impression. In fact i would say that the fact that people are not on here discussing more problems than they do is actually a good sign!

I would say the best thing to do is come down to Cardiff for the weekend and have a look around.

You need to speak to Mike Baker at Peter Mulchay Estate Agents (029 20515123) and John Coombes (02920 513151 http://www.joncoombes.co.uk/ ) as they handle pretty much 95% of the property in DP.

Oh, and i'm pretty sure there is an orchestra hiding somewhere in the village. I remember there being a performance recently. Good for the missus ;)

Re: Is Dinas Powys a good place to live?

Thanks for the quick response!  I'm aiming to come down in the next month of so to have a proper look around. Its reassuring regarding the good reputation of the schools etc. Are there particular roads/areas that I should be looking regarding property (quiet etc)? I'll contact the estate agents above for more information as well

Thanks again

Rob

Re: Is Dinas Powys a good place to live?

Hi Rob,

As you say, I would recommend you speak to Mike or John about the areas that your budget will allow. There are quite a few houses in the £1m+ area around the village, something here for most peoples taste.

It wouldn't be a good idea for me to say what I think are the good/less good areas on here.

As with most things, you will get what you pay for.... BUT - it's definitely a buyers market at the moment!

Keep in touch

Re: Is Dinas Powys a good place to live?

Rob,

heres the low down:

Ive lived in St Mellons and Dinas Powys, both in South Wales near Cardiff, both have council housing but Dinas is a hell of a lot nicer place to live. Lets face it you get hooligans everywhere, the ratio of hoooligans to normal people in Dinas is very low for a UK village of this size. Good local train links, very bad rush hour traffic since only one road in and out of Dinas and Barry residents use it as a rat run.

Anywhere in dinas is walking distance to rural walks in woods and fields -although lots of dog walkers and resultant consequences in narrow areas, less than 1/2 hour drive to a sandy beach. Museums, shops, clubs, three leisure centres, sailing and watersports a shhort drive away. A council run skate and bike ramp park for kids in dinas itself. Ive lived in a lot of places in and out of the UK and dinas is one of the nicer places.
