Traffic in Dinas Powys - Where do you work?
Modified By dinaspowys on 1/20/2008 7:30:41 PM)

Hi,

I am finding it more and more difficult to get to work in the morning. For me there are 3 ways to work to try and get there for 9am.

  • Penny Turnpike Lane and then down Leckwith Hill, onto the link road, through the tunnels, then the foreshore road and onto eastern avenue.
  • Cardiff Road and through the new lights by the Beefeater, onto the link road and then as above
  • Through the lanes past St Andrews onto the A4050 and up to Culverhouse X, onto the M4 and the roadworks straight there

I am trying to get to Cardiff Gate for 9am. Takes about 45mins to do 12 miles.

Anyone else got any hard luck stories? I bet someone has a worse trip to work?

Trev

Traffic

well I don't have that far to go but my main problem is trying to avoid being knocked off my bike! It is getting a lot worse though. Trying to get out of our road onto the main road is a nightmare.

Traffic in Dinas Powys - school kids health + pollution!

Ok, I admit commuting is a problem, but as the parent of 2 young children the biggest problem I see is all the airborne pollution from the high volume of cars, busses and trucks stopping at the traffic lights by the infants school. Many of theHGVs and busses emit high levels of diesel particulates. Recent studies have shown that the distance from a main polluting road is inversely proportianal to the level of asthma, respiratory tract and other illnesses. http://www.sdearthtimes.com/et0603/et0603s21.html

One recent report stated there are 10,000 vehicles a day travelling on Cardiff rd!

These children spend more then six hours per day, 5 days a week right beside the source of pollution. How many of them now have asthma or are going to develop lung canger, emphysema or other serious illnesses later in life from exposing their sensitive lungs to these pollutionts due to the lackadaisical attitute of the council to this problem?

There should be a bypass for this reason alone.

Re: Traffic in Dinas Powys - school kids health + pollution!

Totally agree about the pollution!! Trouble is we will never get a bypass. They talk and talk about it but it will never happen. The problem with building more roads anyway is that traffic just grows to fill them and before you know it we're back to square one. Cardiff Road was the bypass round the original village and look at it now!

Anyway the local council are now concerned with pedestrianising the 'square' will that make a difference to anything!

Re: Traffic in Dinas Powys - school kids health + pollution!

As someone who was raised in Dinas Powys but who now lives 12000 kms away in Sydney, I get back to Dinas Powys occasionally and can compare how it is now to the 1960's.  Couple of things that effect traffic issues plus a few other observations

1.  Parents - stop driving your kids to school - let them walk  - we did even when it rained

2.  Stop traffic driving through village. Make it pedestrian only.  Pehaps old Watts Garage site should be made into car parking.

3.  Improve the bus services - pathetic - buses are too slow, too small, too crowded and too infrequent

4.  Turn the area of common between the Southra and Cardiff Road into a car park - handy for village and for trains/buses  - my parents will probably disown me for saying that

5.  Do something about the castle - either restore it or put it out of its misery - its an embarressment

6.  The village is not a village any more - its a badly designed thoroughfare

7.  Limit car ownership to 3 per family - in my tiem a family was lucky to have one car

Cheers

Richard Jeffery
